AT&T has denied that it is forcing its 2G customers to upgrade to 3G contracts by switching its W-CDMA networks to 850MHz and moving GSM/EDGE services to the 1900MHz band. The operator is attempting to boost the coverage of its 3G systems by using the more widespread 850MHz network, but this is leaving 2G users in some markets without GSM/EDGE coverage at 1900MHz. In a statement, AT&T’s executive director of analyst relations, Mark Siegel, denies that the firm’s salespeople are advising customers to switch from 2G to 3G.
