Telefonica-owned O2 has won the exclusive UK distribution rights for the Palm Pre smartphone, according to a report from Guardian.co.uk, which says an announcement is due next week. Reports have linked the two companies to a UK tie-up for the some time and it would be quite a coup for the Spanish-owned company, which would be the exclusive seller of both the Pre and Apple’s iPhone in a key smartphone market.The Pre is hoped by some to be a serious iPhone rival and according to analysts it’s sold more than 300,000 units since its US launch last month. That’s impressive but not compared to the one million iPhone 3GS units Apple sold in three days last month. And as far as O2 is concerned, it profits no matter who wins in that fight.
